Volunteer to be a Zombie for a Day! The Undead needs you! We also need other volunteers for the Zombie 5K Run/Walk and to help with Autumn Fun Fest activities, games, and logistics. Race shirts and an event souvenir will be provided to all volunteers, even Zombies who won’t be wearing their tees that day. Please note: Zombie costumes and makeup are not provided.

General Volunteer Information

Thank you for helping make the Zombie 5K Survival Run/Walk & Autumn Fun Fest possible. We really appreciate race & fun fest volunteers and the fabulous walking dead Zombies who make this event possible… and special. Volunteers represent the event and help us create a safe, memorable, welcoming experience for guests. And we know that can mean a successful event or a dismal one.

Your participation is so valuable to us and we hope you have a wonderful time.

Volunteers Agree To:

• Check in at the assigned time and remain at their assigned station until relieved or released by a volunteer coordinator.

• Follow instructions and safety information from event leadership, medical personnel, course officials, and city personnel.

• Treat participants, children, vendors, spectators, meet officials, and fellow volunteers respectfully.

• Immediately report injuries, hazards, lost children, conflicts, or other safety concerns to event leadership. Also tell event leadership if you experience an unwelcoming, hostile, or uncomfortable situation immediately. A cell phone number for calls and texts before, during, and after the events will be provided to you but don’t hesitate to contact the proper authorities if a situation requires immediate attention or next-level support.

• Never leave an assigned child-focused activity or safety station unattended without arranging for another volunteer or event leadership can take over. Be sure to call or text the number provided to you if you need any assistance or for someone to be your back up.

• You will not need to handle any money. All money and fees will be collected using a QR code. A participant scans the QR code on their SmartPhone and can pay using a credit or debit card or use Venmo. They are taken to a page where they can register for the 5K, pay for games/activities if there is a charge, or purchase anything other than charges, food, drinks, or merchandise sold by an outside vendor. If asked to take cash directly, please let them know it’s not possible and call Event Leadership if needed.

• Donations to the Jessamine County Animal Care & Control can also be made by using the QR code you’ll be given. We’ll donate the money to them in one check after the event. Or people can write checks directly to the Jessamine County Animal Care and Control. If they use the QR code, they’ll have a receipt for their records and taxes from that transaction. We can also send them a receipt if needed. Text the person’s email or text number, name, the amount of their donation or purchase, and what they purchased to Event Leadership. We’ll send a receipt to them that day, if possible, no later than 48 hours. as soon as possible no more than 48 hours.

• Avoid smoking or vaping while staffing an event station or interacting with participants. Refrain from alcohol, recreational drugs or impairment while volunteering.

• Protect participant information and do not photograph participants or share/post personal information obtained through volunteering.

• Use event property and supplies appropriately and help return the assigned area to good condition.

• Understand that unsafe conduct, harassment, refusal to follow safety instructions, or behavior inconsistent with a family event may result in removal from the volunteer assignment.

• Feel free to ask any questions and make any suggestions you’d like. And invite friends to register to volunteer!

Zombie Volunteer Addendum

So, You Want to Be a Zombie…Excellent choice. The dead are thrilled but you should know. Our Zombies are extremely well-behaved undead. They make the event… or should we say… YOU make the event extra special. But we do have a few guidelines and things to be aware of before you sign up.

Zombie volunteers must arrive already dressed as a Zombie. If they don’t have one, they can still volunteer in another way but not as a zombie.

Costumes, makeup, and costume supplies are not provided or reimbursed by the event.

Zombie volunteers agree to:

• Remain in their assigned Zombie Zone unless directed otherwise by race or event staff.

• Never touch a participant.

• Maintain approximately three feet/one arm's length of separation whenever reasonably possible.

• Never grab clothing, block a participant, step directly into a runner's path, trip, shove or intentionally force someone to change direction to avoid a collision.

• Never throw anything at a participant, which includes props, bags, liquids, food, confetti, or other objects.

• Never use realistic weapons or props that could reasonably be mistaken for weapons.

• Wear footwear suitable for uneven outdoor ground. Take your time and be safe on the course, especially if you are looking ahead because there could be tree roots, holes, litter, rocks, etc. (We do our best to take care of those but it’s Mother Nature.) So, go slowly, grunt appropriately, and be extra cautious because you’ve already managed to get infected for a day with a non-existent contagion.

• Avoid costumes, masks, shoes, props, or accessories that substantially interfere with vision, hearing or safe movement.

Stop immediately if a participant appears frightened or distressed beyond the playful nature of the event. Likewise, if you feel distressed or uncomfortable, stop what you are doing, remove yourself from the situation immediately, and seek out Event Leadership or appropriate assistance.
